Should you ‘get on your head’ or ‘off your head’?

sourced from: https://yogasynergy.com/get-on-your-head/

Are you feeling ungrounded? and maybe a bit ‘Off your head’ from too much partying perhaps? Are you feeling lacking in lacking in self confidence?

Well here is the solution… Get ‘onto your head’ (instead of ‘getting off your head’!) and build your self confidence by letting the ‘sun shine out of you’! by first ‘putting the sun into you’!

Thanks to my amazing photographer and dear friend Alessandro Sigismondi for his brilliance in capturing this magic moment at Mandrem beach, North Goa, India.

On a more serious note this is not a safe posture for most people to try. Today this was just for fun, and my studies really tell me that most people in the modern world are not really qualified or ready to practice headstand, and although many people can physically stand on their heads, they are not getting the true … Read More

Four Things I Learned Teaching My First 100 Yoga Classes in 100 Days

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/four-things-i-learned-teaching-my-first-yoga-classes/

After graduating from Yogacara Global 200 hour Teacher Training last spring, I immediately started teaching 7 classes a week. I had soon taught 100 classes in my first 100 days of teaching! Just like many jobs I’ve held before, I found that the first 3 months were full of lessons. In this time, I identified four takeaways that I hope will inspire new teachers and bring a smile to the face of experienced instructors.

1. Don’t Overthink It

As a new teacher, I was very anxious, examining each class through a critical microscope. Was I holding the pose long enough? Did the sequence flow smoothly? Was I being too repetitive? I started down the path of crippling overthin… Read More

How Do You Reset?

How Do You Reset?

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/how-do-you-reset/

There are clothes over junk mail, next to a book on yoga, next to a pocketful of change, next to an empty paper towel roll on the counter, next to a sink full of dishes. There are flip flops under the counter, slip-ons by the door, running shoes kicked against opposite walls in the bedroom, a disheveled row of shoes I keep around just in case I get back into basketball or golf or wearing suits. Shirts crawl out of my hamper like zombies from a grave, missed sock-shots surround it, other clothes are piled against the wall. At least the bed is made, my bed is always made. There are stacks of books I intend to read on the desk under stories I’ve written and notes from notes from a hands-on assist workshop. The bathroom could use a scrub down.

When I get carried away with everything else life tosses at me, I lose focus. My apartment is a direct reflection of my life when I’ve been running around and how I’m feeling. When it’s a mess, I’m stressed. Wh… Read More

The Gift of Restoration

The Gift of Restoration

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/the-gift-of-restoration/

As a newer yoga teacher, I often am critical of the classes I teach. Did people like it? Was it challenging enough? Will they come back for another class with me? More often than not I find myself battling with the question of whether or not what I did or was enough.

A few weeks ago I taught a class when I wasn’t feeling my best. I had recently found out my grandmother was going on hospice, and I wasn’t feeling very present or “zen”. So, instead of a vigorous and flowing vinyasa class, I taught a slow, restorative class for a group of people who are usually there looking for a good workout. It was a very different class from what this particular group was used to. At the end of the c… Read More

Your Body, Your Sequencing

Your Body, Your Sequencing

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/your-body-your-sequencing/

Perhaps right now you are still trying to figure out the perfect system for sequencing a yoga class properly. You have probably tried different ways to sequence a class, ways that perhaps you learnt from a teacher, your yoga teacher training or both. However, have you thought that perhaps the art of sequencing goes beyond the techniques you have learnt from others, books and the hundreds of articles out there?

Once I had a teacher that came to a class I was subbing; she was also auditioning me to work at that studio. I respected her a lot and loved the way that she sequenced her classes. I was nervous when she came in to take my class. I had a lot of respect for her and I guess I wanted to give back to her and teach her an ‘a… Read More

Embracing My True Shy Self

Embracing My True Shy Self

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/embracing-my-true-shy-self/

I grew up believing that being shy was a bad thing. I’m naturally introverted and growing up I was painfully shy. I found it very difficult to feel at ease in group situations and I would freeze up when anyone wanted to talk to me. Being shy made it painfully uncomfortable for me to talk about myself. I preferred to listen.

Growing up, I felt pressure from my parents and teachers to step out of my comfort zone. I’m not sure what gave me more anxiety, being told not to be shy or actually being shy. As I entered teenage hood, I discovered that drugs and alcohol made it easier for me to be outgoing. This unconscious form of self-medicating settled my naturally shy and anxious soul. Under the influence, I could behave with more… Read More

Hi Yogis,

I am honoured to be one of 25 master yoga teachers, consciousness leaders and wisdom keepers chosen to discuss natural intelligence — how yoga at its roots is designed to connect us to our essential, natural Selves, and how reconnecting to this nature-based wisdom is vital to heal and whole not only us personally, but our world.

My Talk is called, “Normal People Living an Unnatural Life” and I share how the norm for modern humans is physiologically unnatural, and why hatha yoga must be adapted to support us in returning to our natural state.

Please join me, along with H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Trevor Hall, Ana Forrest, Saul David Raye, Janet Stone and so many other inspiring leaders in the field of yoga and awakening consciousness to learn tools, tips and yogic wisdom to heal dis-ease … Read More

When I first started practicing yoga, there weren’t many options available when purchasing a yoga mat—you could choose between a few colors and two thicknesses. The yoga mat industry has changed dramatically since then, now there is a dizzying number of brands that offer multiple styles of mats with various properties based on the materials, thickness, style of yoga practiced. We recently were sent a pile of yoga mats to …
