Every yogi knows that yoga is all about connecting to your breath and finding your balance, but where does knowledge of proper pose names come in and what is the importance of knowing the physical effects of the poses? While knowing the effects and names of the yoga poses is not necessary to practice yoga, having this knowledge will make it easier to follow along in a yoga class and …

Cultivating Secure Attachment Through Yoga

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/cultivating-secure-attachment-through-yoga/

I’m a mama to a charming 8-year-old girl. She inadvertently teaches me a life lesson almost daily. I’m open to the lessons, and like many parents I’m trying my best to raise a kind, resilient and happy human being.

Typically, yoga and attachment don’t go together… in the yoga sutras, we are invited to practice the internal discipline of Aparigraha, which loosely translates to non-attachment.

Secure attachment, however, is rooted in developmental psychology and is the emotional bond between baby and caregiver. Our attachment style continues to develop throughout childhood; when we are securely attached we feel safe to … Read More

How Can I Be Happy?

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/how-can-i-be-happy/

We may not say it out loud but if we look at how we live our lives, we’ll likely see that the question that underscores everything we do, is: “How Can I Be Happy?” It is unfortunate but true that our education – both in school and the education we get from culture and media – offers us little by way of an answer to the question, “how can I be happy?”

If the question is answered at all, it is via implicit messages in advertising. Advertising’s covert message seduces us into thinking that happiness is a function of what we have: if only I can get that bag, that outfit, that car, that vacation, that job, that lifestyle, that relationship, then I will be happy. Whether it is material goods or status (societal status or relationship status), we are told from a young age that happiness is a function of what we have. The answer we hear to our question, “How can I be happy?” is, “You will be happy when you get these things.” So, the message is that happiness i… Read More

Has yoga lost its soul in the West?

sourced from: https://yogasynergy.com/yoga-lost-soul-west/

Today I was asked ‘Has yoga lost its soul in the West?’ … Here is an answer I just wrote …

I think that most people teaching modern yoga have good intentions and some modern yoga does seem to help some people for some time. However, I don’t think that what is mostly being taught under the banner of yoga in the modern world today is not really yoga, but more a type of exercise system similar to the aerobics of the 1980’s.

Yoga means union and on a global level it is the recognition that every individual consciousness is related to every other individual consciousness in the same loving way that a mother naturally relates to a newborn baby, with selfless service and loving intent and the way a baby relates to that in terms of feeling safe and loved. If this was happening between all the conscious entities in the world today then I would say that the world is in yoga. But before this can happen on this world scale is must first be achieved … Read More

We look forward to seeing you on the mat for the Earth Sequence.

Earth is the first of the 5 sequences, and is usually practiced at the beginning of the year after the holiday season to firmly put our feet back on the ground. Summer is hot and the practice needs to be responsive to this by being calm and cooling. The intention with which we practice this sequence is to set the foundations for the year, to create a steady mind and regular practice, the beginning of the advancement towards a long-term, stable practice.

For those who join us from home, download your copy of the Earth Sequence from our online shop.

Wishing you all the best with your practice.

How Can I Be An Authentic Teacher?

sourced from: https://www.yogateachertrainingyogacara.com/how-can-i-be-an-authentic-teacher/

I remember the moment I discovered my inner authentic teacher. I was subbing for a class usually taught by a very athletic teacher. It was full of students who enjoyed handstands and doing the most advanced variations of the asana.

Before subbing this class I was a nervous wreck! I was detached from who I was as an authentic teacher and had no idea how I was supposed to teach these advanced asana that I had never even practiced myself. The day before subbing, I had a moment of clarity: everything happens for a reason and I am meant to be there, on that day, as an authentic teacher and the students are meant to get my authentic lesson that day.

I went into the class and taught what felt right for me: a much sl… Read More
